Dangers of Shopping

No I'm not referring to the dent that shopping will put on your wallet. No I'm not referring to the anger that will consume your man when he looks at the credit card bill and see's the amount for those Louboutin's and Jimmy Choo's and YSL's that you bought over the weekend. I'm talking about something else that's very serious that you may not know about.

All those receipts contain millions of times more BISPHENOL-A (BPA)- the cancer-causing, estrogen-mimicking chemical- than a plastic water bottle.

BPA is dangerous, even in small amounts. Studies show that it may cause cancers, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and more.

Nearly every modern register uses this kind of paper. And every receipts, according to this new research, contains from 40 mg to 100 mg of BPA. In comparison, a plastic water bottle contains nano grams of BPA. BPA is a chemical compound  that allows the receipts to print without old-fashioned carbon paper.

That's a lot of BPA. Now, I should point out that nobody has done any studies yet to find out how much of the BPA from each receipt gets from your skin into your blood stream. But we do know that estrogen can be absorbed by the skin- just think of the birth control patch. So it's likely that some or all of that BPA may seep into your skin.

The EWG recommends the following tips to reduce exposures to BPA in receipts:
  • Minimize receipt collection by declining receipts at gas pumps, ATMs and other machines when possible.
  • Store receipts separately in an envelope in a wallet or purse.
  • Never give a child a receipt to hold or play with.
  • After handling a receipt, wash hands before preparing and eating food (a universally recommended practice even for those who have not handled receipts).
  • Do not use alcohol-based hand cleaners after handling receipts. A recent study showed that these products can increase the skin's BPA absorption (Biedermann 2010).
  • Take advantage of store services that email or archive paperless purchase records.
  • Do not recycle receipts and other thermal paper. BPA residues from receipts will contaminate recycled paper.
  • If you are unsure, check whether paper is thermally treated by rubbing it with a coin. Thermal paper discolors with the friction; conventional paper does not.

The Real Story Behind Charlie Sheen Joining Twitter

2 MILLION FOLLOWING HIM NOW!!!
Behold the explosive power of the drug called Charlie Sheen and his fire-breathing fists.
If you didn’t hear, yesterday Charlie Sheen joined Twitter. Today he very well may reach 1 million followers (as I type he’s already passed the 900K mark).
How did it happen?  Why all of a sudden did he wake up and decide it’s Twitter time? And how was it that Charlie Sheen went from non-twitterer to hardcore twitterer overnight?  Short answer: he got a lot of help from a team of experts at Ad.ly, a small Beverly Hills start-up that focuses on celebrity endorsements via Facebook and Twitter.
When Charlie Sheen started tweeting I went to look at his page.  I noticed he was, at that time, only following a few people.  One of them was Chris Ovitz, whose Twitter bio says “Director of Business Development at Ad.ly, Entrepreneur, and huge dork.”
I was very familiar with Ad.ly — a former AOL colleague works there. I thought it strange that an Ad.ly employee was one of the first people Charlie Sheen followed on Twitter, so I emailed my friend and then got on the phone with Ad.ly CEO Arnie Gullov-Singh.
“Yesterday morning a friend of Charlie Sheen’s reached out to Ad.ly’s celebrity team and said Charlie would like to get on Twitter,” Arnie told me.  “Charlie said he wants to communicate directly with his fans and bypass the media.”
Turns out Charlie Sheen’s friend knows a couple of people from the Ad.ly team.  When Charlie decided he wanted to talk to his audience through Twitter, his friend asked Ad.ly for help.   Ad.ly reached out to Twitter and secured Charlie’s verified account. The Ad.ly team then spent a couple of hours on the phone with Charlie Sheen and his friend explaining the tools of Twitter: hashtags, bit.ly, twit pic, and how to use Twitter to build an audience and keep them engaged.
“During the call Charlie was focused and really excited about communicating directly with his fans.  He had seen other celebrities join Twitter and he realized it was the best way for him to tell his side of the story directly to his audience,” said Arnie.  “He’s been posting pictures, that’s really helped.  The first picture he’s posted has been viewed over a million times already. I think we are about 24 hours into the life of Charlie Sheen’s Twitter account and he has 900,000 followers. I’ve never seen growth from zero to 900K in 24 hours.”
Ad.ly did not charge Charlie Sheen for the Twitter set-up consultation; they say it’s part of how they work with the Hollywood community.
“We’ve become the go-to guys in Hollywood for social media. This isn’t the first time we’ve done this for a celebrity,” said Arnie.  “We’ve done this on numerous occasions.  This is just the first time it’s taken off so quickly.”
Ad.ly delivers celebrity endorsements when they’re needed, in a very short time period. They don’t have contracts with celebrities; Ad.ly forges an on-demand relationship.  They work with brands to help them advertise to scale on Facebook and Twitter, and they do this using celebrities.  When a brand has a campaign they match it with anywhere from 12 to 50 celebrities, people like Lauren Conrad, the Kardashians, or Snoop Dogg.  Those celebrities are matched based on their fan base, and they receive a flat fee for each post on Facebook or Twitter.  It’s always disclosed that it’s an ad, using variations like #ad or (ad) or the celebrity simply typing “I’m working with Brand X.”
According to Ad Age, celebrity endorsements are a $50B global business.  Over the past 12 months Ad.ly has run 24K endorsements for 150 brands.  Does this mean we’ll see Charlie Sheen twittering out celeb endorsements? Not just yet, says Arnie.
“All of his tweets have been organic so far.  Right now it’s all about helping him get started.  We really didn’t think he’d have 900K followers in 24 hours.  It’s inevitable that brands will be lining up to work with him.  That time will come sooner rather than later.”

7 dates that’ll create instant chemistry

You’ve had a pleasant date or two, but you “just aren’t feeling it…” yet. Rest assured, attraction isn’t always instant: Research shows that it typically takes a guy three meetings to fall for a woman — and as many as 20 dates for her to feel the same. Plus, there are things you can do during these early outings that’ll help get some chemistry percolating and jump-start your budding relationship. So, consider skipping your typical dinner date and trying one of these options to get a buzz going between you.

Date idea #1: Go hunting
No, not the hunting that requires killing furry creatures — rather, the two of you taking on a mission to find something, be it a gift for Mother’s Day or some much-needed furniture for your date’s den. Errand-running may not seem very romantic, but it’s actually a modern-day version of an ancient bonding ritual where people had to hunt together to survive. Says David Givens, Ph.D., an anthropologist and author of Love Signals: A Practical Field Guide to the Body Language of Courtship, “Searching involves reward, and the shared pleasure when you find, say, the perfect jacket is reminiscent of the hunter-gatherers finding food.” So, don’t be surprised if by the end of your shopping spree you start feeling a real connection with your partner in crime.
Date idea #2: Get dizzy
According to one study, men and women who met on a bridge high over rushing water rated each other as more attractive than those they met elsewhere. The lesson for you? Vertigo is your friend. “There’s something about staring down dizzying distances that makes the heart grow fonder, perhaps because the adrenaline rush, sweaty palms, and racing pulse you feel bears a striking resemblance to the sensations you experience during — you got it — arousal, and people can’t help but transfer those feelings to the person they’re with,” notes Givens. So, got a hot date coming up? We’re not suggesting you say, “Meet me on a bridge” — that would be odd, for sure. But you can propose heading to that restaurant or lounge that’s nearly always situated atop a city’s highest skyscraper. Or, try a rooftop club or venue where there’s a balcony. Go rock climbing, or hike up a mountain together. Just think: the higher you go, the more attracted you’ll be to each other!

Date idea #3: Attend a group dining experience
Move the typical date meal away from the two-top (that’s waiter-speak for “table for two”) and into a communal dining spot — like the grill-table at a Benihana-style Japanese place or a shared table at a busy Italian or German restaurant. Eating amongst others not only takes the pressure off you both to continue an ongoing tête-à-tête, it also helps to establish the two of you as a de facto couple. According to Givens, we all have a common fear of strangers, and individuals will bond more closely with the person they know best when interacting with a bunch of people. “In a group setting, you’re a pair united against a world of strangers,” says Givens. And that will get you bonding more strongly.

Date idea #4: Get in touch with your artistic sides
Even if you’re no Picasso, proposing a pottery, painting, or mosaic class can make you see your date in a whole new (and sexier) light. That’s because creative endeavors are more intuitive and sensory-driven than your more rational, logical date-night activities, like conversations about books you’ve read recently or the pros and cons of telecommuting. Plus, if you’re working on creating something together, even better. Couples at all relationship stages bond this way, whether they’re making babies, renovating their fixer-upper, or just trying out a Thai recipe for the first time. “You’re no longer strangers when you’re trying to make the same dish,” points out Givens. “You’ll get to like each other pretty fast, and it creates a natural synchronicity.”

Date idea #5: Get nosy
Of all your five senses, scent will kick-start the mood like no other. “Smell is chemical,” says Givens. “It activates the emotional part of the brain.” So, by comparing notes at a cheese-tasting event or breathing in the aromas at a local lilac or orchid festival, you two will be all the more tuned into more sentimental thoughts — maybe even about each other.

Date idea #6: Dance, dance, dance
Get your eyes locked, your feet in step and your hands all over each other… at a ballroom dancing lesson. According to Travis Hendricks, an instructor at Dance New York (which sent two contestants to participate inDancing With the Stars), the latest dance craze is salsa. “It’s such a sensual dance,” says Hendricks. “You dance very close.” If the Latin dance doesn’t appeal, try learning the cha-cha or Peabody. Regardless of your dance preference, you’ll find you and your date moving towards a real connection because it forces you to get your bodies in synch and mirror each other’s movements — a proven tactic for forging a bond. “Dancing is an immediate way to get on the same page,” says Givens. “It has both a tactile and a visual dimension of sameness, which creates great rapport.”
Take a note from the President

Date idea #7: Play a game together
Whether it’s playing pool or Taboo, a little competition can create instant chemistry. Just avoid head-to-head competition early on — no one likes being on the losing end, so try teaming up against another couple or some pals. That way, you reap the benefits of game play, regardless of whether you win or lose. “When you’re paired together against other people, you and your date become natural allies,” says Givens. “Your mutual aggression is going outwards. It’s a very strong way to bond.”

John Galliano Fired from Dior

Fashion world flocks to see what could conceivably be John Galliano's last ever collection
Galliano's longtime employer, luxury supernova Dior, fired him last Tuesday amid allegations he made anti-Semitic insults and after a video showing a drunk Galliano saying "I love Hitler" went viral on the Internet.
The saga, which has riveted the fashion world for the past ten days and cast a palpable pall over Paris' ready-to-wear displays, also threw the future of the designer's signature label into doubt. The John Galliano brand is owned by Dior parent company LVMH Moet Hennessy.
For several days after Galliano's surprise sacking, it wasn't clear whether his label's fall-winter 2011-12 ready-to-wear collection would be shown to the press and buyers at all. But finally company executives settled on holding a low-key presentation instead of the big-budget blockbuster runway shows that have become a trademark of the house.
Galliano, who is rumoured to be in rehab in Arizona, wasn't present at Sunday's display. But for those who love his work, it was a moving moment, and one to savour.
There were only 19 looks, but they all fairly oozed Galliano's unmistakable style. The models' makeup, too, and their languid walk and exaggerated poses were exactly as the designer would have done it himself.
Asked whether Sunday's presentation would help turn the page on the Galliano scandal,Style.com senior editor Tim Blanks said: "It's going to take a while. This is like an open wound for the industry and it's going to take a long time to fully heal over."
Though Galliano is all anyone seems to talk about these days, Sunday also included shows by other heavy-hitters, including Celine, Hermes, Kenzo and Givenchy — which was the object of intense scrutiny because the rumour mill has it that its young Italian designer, Riccardo Tisci, is a top contender to replace Galliano.
The line up on Monday, day seven of Paris' nine-day-long fashion week, is also a substantial one, with shows by Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Chloe and Emanuel Ungaro.
JOHN GALLIANO
The event showcased just 19 looks — fewer than half of what would typically be shown on the catwalk.
Models in full Galliano regalia traced lazy circles around Baroque, flower-covered centerpieces, pausing in front of the photographers' pits to strike exaggerated poses.
The clothing, bias cut gowns in sheer chiffon and oversized outerwear, was old school Galliano. Voluminous tweed jackets were paired with pencil skirts — some of them in pastel tinged latex — and flirty little pleated sundresses poked out from beneath fur-trimmed parkas. Marabou feathers undulated lazily from the hemline and sleeves of a long, lean gown in black silk that glinted with sequins.
At the Dior show on Friday — where the full 60-odd-look, Galliano-overseen collection was shown without the designer — the makeup was toned down. But the girls at Galliano were in their full splendor, their lips painted into dark, little bow shapes, their eyes heavy with liner and shadow and their cheeks shimmering with pinky blush.
Maybe it was the eyepopping makeup and garb, or the golden afternoon sun that streamed in through the windows, but the general mood at Sunday's presentation was lighter, less sombre than at the almost funereal Dior show.
Dior CEO Sidney Toledano, who at Friday's show denounced Galliano's comments in a strongly worded statement, was also on-hand for Sunday's presentation, glad-handing industry insiders. Though what his presence there meant for the company's uncertain future was far from clear.
"It's the million-dollar question: What was Toledano doing there?" said Style.com's Tim Blanks.
Beyond the question of what will happen to the John Galliano label, the 50-year-old designer's own future, too, is in doubt. A Paris court has ordered he stand trial on charges of "public insults based on the origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" against three people. The trial could take place between April and June and Galliano could face up to six months in prison and €22,500 ($31,000) in fines, if convicted.
