8 of the World’s Healthiest Spices & Herbs You Should Be Eating

Modern science is beginning to uncover the ultimate power of spices and herbs, as weapons against illnesses from cancer to Alzheimer's disease. "We're now starting to see a scientific basis for why people have been using spices medicinally for thousands of years," says Bharat Aggarwal, Ph.D., professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and author of Healing Spices (Sterling, 2011).
Aggarwal notes that in his native India, where spices tend to be used by the handful, incidence of diet-related diseases like heart disease and cancer have long been low. But when Indians move away and adopt more Westernized eating patterns, their rates of those diseases rise. While researchers usually blame the meatier, fattier nature of Western diets, Aggarwal and other experts believe that herbs and spices-or more precisely, the lack of them-are also an important piece of the dietary puzzle. "When Indians eat more Westernized foods, they're getting much fewer spices than their traditional diet contains," he explains. "They lose the protection those spices are conveying."
While science has yet to show that any spice cures disease, there's compelling evidence that several may help manage some chronic conditions (though it's always smart to talk with your doctor). What's not to love? Here we've gathered eight of the healthiest spices and herbs enjoyed around the world.
Chile Peppers May help: Boost metabolism.
Chile peppers add a much-appreciated heat to chilly-weather dishes, and they can also give a boost to your metabolism. Thank capsaicin, the compound that gives fresh chiles, and spices including cayenne and chipotle, their kick. Studies show that capsaicin can increase the body's metabolic rate (causing one to burn more calories) and may stimulate brain chemicals that help us feel less hungry. In fact, one study found that people ate 16 percent fewer calories at a meal if they'd sipped a hot-pepper-spiked tomato juice (vs. plain tomato juice) half an hour earlier. Recent research found that capsinoids, similar but gentler chemicals found in milder chile hybrids, have the same effects-so even tamer sweet paprika packs a healthy punch. Capsaicin may also lower risk of ulcers by boosting the ability of stomach cells to resist infection by ulcer-causing bacteria and help the heart by keeping "bad" LDL cholesterol from turning into a more lethal, artery-clogging form.
Don't Miss: Foods That Blast Belly Fat
Ginger May help: Soothe an upset stomach, fight arthritis pain.
Ginger has a well-deserved reputation for relieving an unsettled stomach. Studies show ginger extracts can help reduce nausea caused by morning sickness or following surgery or chemotherapy, though it's less effective for motion sickness. But ginger is also packed with inflammation-fighting compounds, such as gingerols, which some experts believe may hold promise in fighting some cancers and may reduce the aches of osteoarthritis and soothe sore muscles. In a recent study, people who took ginger capsules daily for 11 days reported 25 percent less muscle pain when they performed exercises designed to strain their muscles (compared with a similar group taking placebo capsules). Another study found that ginger-extract injections helped relieve osteoarthritis pain of the knee.
Cinnamon
May help: Stabilize blood sugar.

A few studies suggest that adding cinnamon to food-up to a teaspoon a day, usually given in capsule form-might help people with type 2 diabetes better control their blood sugar, by lowering post-meal blood-sugar spikes. Other studies suggest the effects are limited at best.
Turmeric
May help: Quell inflammation, inhibit tumors.

Turmeric, the goldenrod-colored spice, is used in India to help wounds heal (it's applied as a paste); it's also made into a tea to relieve colds and respiratory problems. Modern medicine confirms some solid-gold health benefits as well; most are associated with curcumin, a compound in turmeric that has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has been shown to help relieve pain of arthritis, injuries and dental procedures; it's also being studied for its potential in managing heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Researcher Bharat Aggarwal is bullish on curcumin's potential as a cancer treatment, particularly in colon, prostate and breast cancers; preliminary studies have found that curcumin can inhibit tumor cell growth and suppress enzymes that activate carcinogens.
Saffron
May help: Lift your mood.

Saffron has long been used in traditional Persian medicine as a mood lifter, usually steeped into a medicinal tea or used to prepare rice. Research from Iran's Roozbeh Psychiatric Hospital at Tehran University of Medical Sciences has found that saffron may help to relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and depression. In one study, 75% of women with PMS who were given saffron capsules daily reported that their PMS symptoms (such as mood swings and depression) declined by at least half, compared with only 8 percent of women who didn't take saffron.
Parsley
May help: Inhibit breast cancer-cell growth.

University of Missouri scientists found that this herb can actually inhibit breast cancer-cell growth, reported Holly Pevzner in the September/October 2011 issue of EatingWell Magazine. In the study, animals that were given apigenin, a compound abundant in parsley (and in celery), boosted their resistance to developing cancerous tumors. Experts recommend adding a couple pinches of minced fresh parsley to your dishes daily.
Sage
May help: Preserve memory, soothe sore throats.

Herbalists recommend sipping sage tea for upset stomachs and sore throats, a remedy supported by one study that found spraying sore throats with a sage solution gave effective pain relief. And preliminary research suggests the herb may improve some symptoms of early Alzheimer's disease by preventing a key enzyme from destroying acetylcholine, a brain chemical involved in memory and learning. In another study, college students who took sage extracts in capsule form performed significantly better on memory tests, and their moods improved.
Rosemary
May help: Enhance mental focus, fight foodborne bacteria.

One recent study found that people performed better on memory and alertness tests when mists of aromatic rosemary oil were piped into their study cubicles. Rosemary is often used in marinades for meats and poultry, and there's scientific wisdom behind that tradition: rosmarinic acid and other antioxidant compounds in the herb fight bacteria and prevent meat from spoiling, and may even make cooked meats healthier. In March 2010, Kansas State University researchers reported that adding rosemary extracts to ground beef helped prevent the formation of heterocyclic amines (HCAs)-cancer-causing compounds produced when meats are grilled, broiled or fried.

Top 10 Tips for Black Friday Sales

  1. Research: start your Black Friday 2011 sale research on Thanksgiving day or earlier.
  2. Make a plan: identify what you want to buy, which stores have the best sales on Black Friday, and what time they open.
  3. Timing is everything: arrange stores by opening time from early to late.
  4. A fool and his money: be wary of Black Friday deals with quantity limits. If a store only has 10 items at that price, go elsewhere.
  5. Visualize: know where your items are in the store.
  6. Stay Safe: Previous Black Friday sales were honestly deadly; please don't trample or shoot anyone!
  7. Power of numbers: go with a team and attack separate stores or separate sections of the same store. Designate a meeting place.
  8. Bring a snack: only amateurs stop at the food court on Black Friday! (Or the bathroom - so go before you leave.)
  9. The quiet ones: don't ignore stores that don't advertise. They will have Black Friday deals too!!
  10. Have fun: enjoy your family, friends and deals!

Black Friday 2011 Overall Predictions

The 2011 Black Friday climate is far from certain. While in 2010 the economy grew at 3.0% that was a drop from 2009's brisk 5.6% growth and the economy is now projected to slow to anemic 1.6% to 1.7% growth in 2011. The unemployment rate is at 9.1%, plus tens of millions more underemployed or no longer seeking work, and the US Federal Reserve doesn't see unemployment getting below 8.5% until at least 2013. This combined with continued foreclosure problems, a lack of credit, and the introduction of European sovereign debt problems that are seemingly beyond our control, or even that of Europeans, contribute to a continued concern and frugality for most US households. Despite this concern, we've seen a counter-intuitive decline in US household savings rates. Recently above 7%, the highest in a very long time, they have dropped to 3.6% of disposable income in September, though that is still less frugal than the 1-2% we saw from 2005-2007. These factors paint a mixed picture of Black Friday for retailers. Specifically...
  • Spending on average will increase again from $365 to $385 as consumers spend more despite the negativity.
  • The amount of Black Friday shoppers will increase from 212 million last year to 225 million this year. This the biggest of all discount-focused days and will continue to capture the attention of more shoppers given the broader economic difficulties.
  • With more shoppers spending more money, Black Friday spending as a percentage of total holiday sales will increase significantly from 10.0% to 10.6%.
  • The amount of Black Friday online shopping will jump from $648 million to $705 million as people try to avoid stores, and online shopping because even more popular.

Jay Z Makes A Big Statement Tonight on The X Factor

Tonight Jay Z (who I am sure arranged this) made a serious statement to his critics by having millions see his "Occupy" tee on National TV while The X Factor aired. Chris Rene wore the tee during his performance. Check it out below:

‘Occupy Wall Street’ Leader Criticizes Jay-z: ‘He Has the Political Sensibility of A Hood Rat’

    Posted from NecoleBitchie
Jay-z wants a piece of the Occupy Wall Street pie but he doesn’t plan on sharing the profits.
A few weeks ago, Rocawear created t-shirts stamped with ‘Occupy All Streets’ in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement. The t-shirts reportedly went on sale yesterday, however the company was immediately bombarded with criticism after releasing a statement saying that proceeds from the $22 dollar t-shirts would not be donated to the cause:
The ‘Occupy All Streets’ T shirt was created in support of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement. Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.
According to TMZ, supporters of ‘Occupy Wall Street’ were livid with the clothing company and one of the leaders (Priscilla Grim) blasted Jay by saying:
Jay-Z, as talented as he is, has the political sensibility of a hood rat and is a scrotum. To attempt to profit off of the first important social moment of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet.”

As of today, the shirts are no longer available on Rocawear’s website.

Do you think Jay should share the profits with the Occupy Wall Street movement?

Jay is not the only person trying to make a profit off the "Occupy" movement. There are plenty of listing on ebay for tees priced even higher than his, hoodies, car stickers, and the list goes on. He is only receiving the negative comments because of who he is.

Top 10 Cities to Find a Romantic Man

San Francisco's skyline at night. Photo credit: Flickr user "kenny hindgren"
I have an amazingly romantic man but I found this post Chemistry.com for all the singles ladies keeping up with my blog. Chemisty.com apparently has discovered the nation’s Top 10 Cities to Find a Romantic Man.  They used their data based on the personality types of American singles from their site and they say they have uncovered the cities with the highest concentrations of passionate single men- and you may be surprised by where they are romancing!

Their chief scientific advisor, Dr. Helen Fisher, states her thoughts around men and romantic tendencies:

“It’s a myth that men aren’t as romantic as women,” she says. “Your romantic streak just depends on your biological makeup. Based on my research at Chemistry.com, I have found that men who are more expressive of estrogen (and there are lots of them, including some football players,) fall in love more regularly than others. These men are also the most creative when it comes to planning romantic activities, and romantic times are particularly meaningful to them.”

The data revealed the most romantic men- the Negotiators- can be found in cities known for their trendy cultures, as San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, and Austin, TX claim the top 3 spots.

Will Chelsea Handler Ever Find True Love?

    By Jolie du Pre

    Chelsea Handler
Chelsea Handler loves to joke about men, but we have a feeling true love is what she really wants. After less than a year, the comedienne has split from hotelier and residential developer Andre Balazs. The announcement, confirmed by her rep, may come as a surprise to some.
During the start of her relationship with Balazs, folks remember when she was a guest on "Piers Morgan Tonight" last May. Chelsea did everything she could to hold back her enthusiasm. It was like she was a different person. "I'm seeing someone now, but, I have spent so much time exposing my personal life to everybody that I finally am in a situation where I feel like it's disrespectful to another person," she said.
Before her love affair with Andre, and after splitting with Dave Salmoni, Handler was suspected of dating 50 Cent. The strongest evidence? It was when the pair posted Twitpics on the same day.
The rapper tweeted a photo of Chelsea giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Why people keep saying I got jungle fever. I ain't never even kissed a white women. Lol."

Adam Levine serenades his model girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna as she sashays down Victoria's Secret catwalk

Most men would jump at the chance to share the stage with a host of lingerie-clad supermodels.
But for Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, he only had eyes for his model girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna as she sashayed the catwalk at the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
Performing his hit song Moves Like Jagger, smitten Levine was temporarily distracted from his set by the sight of the Russian blonde in blue lingerie.

While he had been in the zone singing when the other models strutted their stuff, Levine, 32, was happy to escort his girlfriend down the runway.

Levine and Vyalitsyna have been dating since early 2010 after meeting at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue release party in Las Vegas where Maroon 5 performed.
However, undoubtedly one of the biggest stars of the Victoria's Secret show was Brazilian supermodels Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio, who are currently fourth and firth in the list of the world's top-paid models.
Mother-of-one Lima, 30, kicked off the show to the sounds of rapper Kayne West's hit Stronger in a simple blue set of knickers and bra, with orange thigh-high boots and a large 'Incredible' cape flowing behind her.
