7 Reuse Ideas for Old Jeans

I'm trying to be more "Green" these days and not only in the sense of making more money. I've been recycling paper and taking it to my daughter's old elementary school so they can earn different things for the school. Being that I'm so obsessed with fashion you can only image the amount of fashion magazines I read and fashion newspapers that come to my house on a daily basis. I really began to feel bad about just adding to the landfills with all this paper. I came across this great post about upcycling your old jeans that aren't in any shape to donate.

Hope you enjoy and try to also live a greener life!

7 Reuse Ideas for Old Jeans  by Alexis Petru

Your old jeans can be cut into strips, sewn, and transformed into kitschy coasters. Photo: Squidoo.com

1. Coasters

You won’t need any sewing experience – just scissors and fabric glue – to make these unique coasters out of jean hems and the seams that run of the length of each pant leg. Just follow these simple instructions fromPolka Dot Pineapple blogger Arlette: After cutting out the hems and seams, apply fabric glue to a small section of one side of the denim; then roll it up tightly. Continue gluing and rolling until you have created your perfectly-sized coaster; then lay the coaster on a flat surface for a few hours to dry.

2. Pocket magnets for the fridge

Need places to keep pens, notepads or coupons in the kitchen? AllFreeCrafts.com suggests this cuteorganization solution: Simply cut out the back pocket from some old jeans, attach a magnet with a hot glue gun and stick the pocket on the fridge.

3. Dog toy

Make a sturdy toy for your four-legged best friend using an old pair of jeans, with this Instructables’ tutorial. Cut off the lower part of one of the pant legs and then cut one of its sides lengthwise. Fold the denim several times, make a loop and knot it, and your dog will have a new plaything to fetch and munch on.

4. Jean skirt

Jean styles may change every few years – skinny, flares or bell bottoms – but a classic denim skirt will always be in fashion. And if you have basic sewing skills, you can easily make your own jean skirt out of that unwanted pair of jeans you have in the closet.
Follow Simplicity.com’s step-by-step directions to create a flared, A-line denim skirt, or, if you prefer a more streamlined pencil skirt, use Threadbanger’s guide on Instructables.com.

5. Kitchen organizers

If you want to cut down on using paper towels around the house, you’ll need a place to store your reusable towels and rags. Hack off the legs on a pair of jeans, cut them in half and then sew the bottoms. Fill these “sleeves” with rags and hang them in the kitchen, so you’ll be ready for that next cleanup job.Photo: TooToo.com (available for purchase)

6. Purses and bags

You can make a wide variety of purses and bags out of old jeans, depending on your sewing abilities and spare time.
Use these instructions from Craftbits.com to make a simple “bootie bag” purse: Cut off the pant legs, and turn the denim inside out. You can either sew the bottom together or use a hot glue gun to fasten the pieces together – if you’re not savvy with a needle and thread or you want an easy project to work on with your kids. Then you’ll use the pant’s seams to make handles, which you can also either sew or glue to attach to the bag.
AllFreeCrafts.com offers another no-sew denim upcycling project that creates the perfect purse for a young girl. Simply cut out the back pocket from a pair of jeans, and use a hot glue gun to attach a string of beads to serve as the handle. Embellish the pocket purse with leftovers from other craft projects like lace, ribbon and fabric flowers.
Or, if you’re ready to take on a more complex sewing project, follow Recycle-crafts.com’s guide to making a chic evening bag or Threadbanger’s tutorial on creating a one-of-a-kind purse with braided denim handles.

7. Coffee cup cozy

Can’t remember to bring your own mug to the coffee shop? Then at least you can take your own cup cozy, so you can reduce your waste while you keep your hands cool.
Make your own denim coffee cup cozy following these instructions from ThriftyFun: You’ll cut out a piece of denim, using your last paper cup cozy as a template, and find some leftover fabric to use as a liner. Sew the two materials together, and then add a button and elastic hair band to securely close the cozy around the cup.

Adele Covers Vogue

Hot off her sweep at the Grammy Awards last night, Adele’s Vogue cover and photo shoot has hit the web and, my god, is it glorious. While I’m sure there will be plenty of talk about whether the mag “slimmed” the plus-size chanteuse, I think, for all intents and purposes, she looks wonderfully like herself. Click through a bunch of the photos shot by Mert Alas an Marcus Piggoti in this slideshow. [Vogue]

The soulful singer dominated the Grammy Awards with six wins, including Album of the Year for "21." The singer who seemed to come out of nowhere is now heard everywhere. Here are some lesser-known facts about the singing sensation.
What’s her real name? The singer goes by Adele, but she was born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins.
Where is she from?As you may have detected from her accent, the songstress was born in Tottenham, North England, in 1988 to a single teen mother, which makes her just 23 years old. The child prodigy began trying out her pipes at the tender age of 4. The soulful sensation became a breakout star when a friend posted some of her tracks on MySpace in 2006.
What was the singer's inspiration? The young artist said that no band served as greater inspiration than, wait for it, the Spice Girls. She said she loved the girl band from the age of 7 and told Now magazine, "Even though some people think they're uncool, I'll never be ashamed to say I love the Spice Girls because they made me who I am."
Who is her beau? The man by Adele’s side at the Grammys is Simon Konecki, a charity entrepreneur. Us Weekly reports that the two met through his environmental organization, Drop4Drop,  he is divorced and has a 5-year-old daughter, he was schooled at Eton (like Prince William), and his nickname is "Swampy."
Who helped her to face her surgery?Adele reveals in the upcoming issue of Vogue that when she had the jitters about getting surgery on her damaged vocal chord, she was calmed by none other than John Mayer. Adele told the magazine, "John Mayer had it done at the same time as I did, and he really helped me be chilled out about it." Other singers who were treated by the same Boston doctor: Julie Andrews and Steven Tyler.

Love is in the Air

These amazing images were created by Karen from the blog Globetrotter Diaries. Check out the link if you want to learn how she created these images. She didn't use instagram or any other photo editting program like you may assume. She actually used her brain and her camera to create these. I think they are amazing.

Brandon Jacobs tells Gisele Bundchen to ‘shut up’

Image from Getty and Written by: Chris Chase
Brandon Jacobs knows nothing about the high road.
The New York Giants running back ripped Gisele Bundchen on Tuesday for comments the supermodel made defending her husband, Tom Brady, after Super Bowl XLVI.
"She just needs to continue to be cute and shut up," the victorious Jacobs told reporters at the Giants championship parade in Manhattan.
Gisele was caught on video criticizing Patriots receivers after Sunday's title game. She was reponding to a heckler inside a Lucas Oil Stadium hallway who said Eli Manning owns Brady. "My husband cannot f*cking throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time," she said. "I can't believe they dropped the ball so many times."
The comments were recorded by the gossip website, theinsider.com.
Jacobs' comments would be insulting enough if they came from somebody who played a big role in New York's victory. But he was so inconsequential in Super Bowl XLVI (nine carries, 37 yards) that nobody would have taken the time to heckle his wife.
Osi Umenyiora was more understanding of Bundchen's comments.
"I mean she's supposed to stay out of things like that," said the Giants defensive end."But at the end of the day that's their relationship and she has the right to say whatever she wants to."
And that's what is lost in this whole thing. Yes, Gisele is a world-famous supermodel. And, yeah, she probably should have known better than to take a heckler's bait in front of video cameras. But forgetting about her swimsuit pictorials and Victoria's Secret commercials and hundreds of millions of dollars, she's still a wife defending her husband.

DIY Sugar Lip Scrub

Posted by  from HonestlyWTF
This week we’re turning to our friend and beauty expert Sarah Howard, of Beauty Banter, who is indulging us with her delectable brown sugar lip scrub tutorial. Inspired by one of her favorite lip polishes, Sarah recently discovered how simple it was to make her own organic version at home. The timing couldn’t be more ideal as winter’s typically unforgiving weather has us yearning for soft and smooth lips! (PS Be sure to head over to Beauty Banter for our favorite beauty products & tips!)

You’ll need:

  • pure coconut oil
  • honey
  • brown sugar
  • a teaspoon
  • a tablespoon
  • a mixing bowl
  • an empty jar or 2.5 oz baby food jar
  • labels (optional)
Make sure that the coconut oil is solid enough to scoop up but soft enough for a spoon to dig in. If the coconut oil is too oily, stick it in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. If the coconut oil is too hard, place it into a sink filled with hot water for 5-10 minutes or until soft. Combine one well-rounded tablespoon of coconut oil with one tablespoon of honey into the bowl. Besides smelling and tasting incredible, coconut oil is actually an amazing natural ingredient for skin and body products. The oil contains fatty acids and antioxidants that moisturize and nourish the skin while honey contains cleansing and healing properties and is a natural binder.
Mix the coconut oil and honey until they bind together. The consistency should look like thick honey-comb honey. Make sure to mash up all of the coconut lumps so that the mixture is clump-free. This will serve as the base of the scrub.
Add two hand packed teaspoons of brown sugar and fold it into the base. Brown sugar not only tastes fantastic, it is also a great natural exfoliant because it’s not too harsh and leaves skin soft to the touch. All of the brown sugar should be coated in the coconut oil and honey base.
Add one teaspoon of just the oil from coconut oil jar into the bowl. This will help smooth out the mixture and make the scrub extra moisturizing. Transfer the scrub from the bowl into a small jar or container.
The edible scrub will last up to 2 weeks if refrigerated. Before using, allow the scrub to stand at room temperature for a good 10 minutes so that the formula softens a bit. Apply scrub to lips in small, circular motions for 1-2 minutes and rinse off with a warm washcloth. Congratulations – you are now armed with a soft, moisturized, and plump pout. Pucker up! xx, Sarah.
